What is The Average Cost to Build a Website?

Updated: Mar 27, 2022

Do you know the average cost to build a website for a small business? The average range to build a website can fall between $5,000-$10,000 with $6,7650 being the average (according to FreshBooks), but on the high end, a total custom website, when you factor in launching and designing it can be between $12,000-$150,000 (according to WebFx). Yikes!!! A website is now critical for any business, and in the digital age websites are the front door for most businesses. So it’s important you get your website right and that can be hard as a nurse. Most of us weren’t trained on building websites, not to mention starting a company, but that’s why you are here at MyEmpoura.com so we can help.

Let's get back to prices, $12,000-$150,000 seem crazy expensive, especially for nurses who are launching their own business. I want to share a bit about my own story, and when I tried to launch my first website. Years ago I had the idea for a job board for nurses – HireNurses.com; I was able to convince my mom, and fellow nurse, to give me her nursing retirement to invest in the idea. In a later blog I’ll tell you more about the story behind HireNurses, but for today, I’ll tell you the hard road I took to getting my first website up and operational. About 10 years ago I was super passionate about an idea, knew how I needed a website to look, but knew nothing about the complexities of building it. I was told to hire a web developer. That was a big mistake, as web developers do what you tell them. Not interpret what you thought you told them. My first version of HireNurses website cost me nearly $30,000 a year in time, and often I worked on the website between the hours of 9pm-3am with an overseas team trying to build our first platform In the end I found an amazing US based developer who saved the platform and got HireNurses launched but by that time I was down to my last dollars I had to make HireNurses work! In that year of trying to build the website it cost me time, money and way too many disagreements with my family about if I had made a mistake. It made me question whether I had wasted a significant portion of my mom’s nursing retirement on my venture. It was painful, but I learned a lot in the process and in the end, HireNurses was acquired (a story for another day).

Over the years, I’ve now built countless websites, and know that a website for a small business should come in right around $3,000-$5,000 if you do most of the work and have a friend who does web development. Since not a lot of us as nurses do have those kind of connections, that’s why we founded MyEmoura.com where starting your company includes everything you need from legal fillings and business documents to building an awesome website all comes in at under $3,000. As a nurse you can avoid the painful and costly mistakes I made, so get started today!
